Day 66: Adjusted the Temperatures on my Refrigerator and Freezer

Lowered the temperatures on my refrigerator and freezers.

According to The Daily Green, “…in general the EPA recommends keeping refrigerators at 37 degrees F and freezers at 3 degrees. Anything colder is probably overkill, and a waste of energy.”

What was your simple green act for the day?

Wow! I think 37 ° F is too cold. I think it´s more efficient to check the food label. The manufacturer shall inform on the packaging what is the ideal temperature. Dairy products are the ones that need more refrigeration, so just look at the cheese, milk and yoghurt.
It is also important to read the manual of the refrigerator. It teaches what kind of food should be placed on each shelf, since the top gets colder than the bottom. People do not like reading manuals, but that´s the way to use an equipment correctly.
I want to take to protest against the lack of legislation requiring manufacturers to put the thermostat on the outside of the refrigerator / freezer. And please, a thermometer! Thus, we can check and adjust the temperature without opening the door.
At least in Brazil, refrigerators (and others electric appliances ) go through a test and are classified according to their energy consumption. It goes to the shop with a label with letters A through E, where A is the most economical. See how it works: http://www.eletrobras.com/elb/... = (95F19022-F8BB-4991-862A-1C116F13AB71)
  • I like the idea of the temp on the outside of the fridge.

Another hint: keep your freezer full, which helps the fridge run more efficiently. I really like your blog--thanks so much for sharing!
  • Good one. Thank you for sharing Stephanie. Happy you are liking.
