Day 289: Dried Herbs To Extend Life

Day 289: Dried Herbs To Extend Life

Besides putting your herbs in the freezer, you can also help to preserve them by drying them out in a dehydrator or at a low temp in the oven. When they are dry, you can grind them up.

According to the NYC Compost Project, “The average New York City household discards two pounds of organic waste each day—adding up to more than one million tons of organic material a year.”

What was your simple green act for the day?

Any dried herb would be keeping the most of it's strength [essential oils] if grinned between palms just before the use, while left in one peace while stored. Drying herbs using natural airflow, w/o heat prevents essential oils to evaporate. Herbs need to be set apart on a large cloth [greenest], or a paper napkin or a plate [I use wooden plates with or w/o a napkin, depending on what I dry] or hanged in a bunch in a well ventilated, dry place, away from direct sunlight [http://www.bestdryingrack.com/...].
Well, most of our homes are such [overheated during the summer, well heated & dry during the winter season thx. to air conditioning /heating systems]. If the electricity is already spent for heating /air conditioning it needs not to be spent for drying herbs in a dryer - using a dryer [with plastic shelves! to add /not stainless steel] for that matter seems as "green washing" the whole thing.
